During the age of transformative manufacturing, war brought quick developments to war machines, specifically aviation. Designed in 1935 by Celestino Rosatelli, the first flight for the Fiat G.50 Freccia (Arrow) took to the air in 1937 for the Italian Air Force. It was ahead of its time in design and performance, handling better than previous monoplane designs, but still lacked in armament and reliability. By 1940, Italy entered WWII, the Fiat G.50 was falling behind the rapid improvements to aircraft created by the war. Although it was known for being maneuverable and quick, it couldn't keep up against the fighters outrunning them in Northern Europe. During the Battle of Britain, the cold weather for the open cockpit used to the Mediterranean, began to show its flaws. The G.50 found more success in the war in North Africa, flying at lower altitudes and worked best in tactical suprise attacks of multiple aircrafts did the G.50 find its place.
